Yay! It is that time of the year again for MozFest session proposals and we will like to invite you to join us in the Global Culture and Heritage Space. This space is for diverse people to bask in their heritage and share tips on how they’ve created dynamic cultural communities both online and in-person. Are you looking to spice up your work and make it more accommodating and inclusive of others? The Global Culture and Heritage space enables us to think critically about which cultures are not being widely recognized and how to connect with other ways of life outside what we currently experience.

Global Culture and Heritage @ MozFest 2021

The MozFest experience has always created a unique platform for technologies, governments, small and big tech companies, and everyday internet users to converge for electrifying activities that build trustworthy AI and shape a healthy internet. However, participants come from diverse backgrounds, but many may struggle to explain why they do what they do, say what they say, or even dress the way they do. The truth remains that the common denominator for our interactions remains the internet which should serve as an equal meeting ground for all.

So who are we in this space? This space is open to everyone who will like to share their cultural experience as it affects their community and also, pose solutions to societal norms that influence the digital space. Bring your home culture to MozFest through this space.

Participants will learn more about the importance of global cultural considerations both online and offline while developing trustworthy AI. They will also explore what digital inclusion issues are faced by minority cultures, share important bits of their culture that require support for preserving through modern-day tech. The space wranglers have leveraged shared ideas to design some key features for space which enables us to share freely. These are:

Cultural party

https://www.mozillafestival.org/en/get-involved/proposals/

  • The cultural party is a one-time cross-festival event featuring activities to showcase culture, heritage and technology. This might include: cooking, games, films, music and other ways for the participants to share their experiences. Building on the metaphor of a house, the virtual cultural party will have many themed “rooms” and informal opportunities for people to connect. For example, in the virtual “basement” space, participants might perform music with guests listening, dancing and asking questions between songs. Meanwhile, in the virtual “kitchen” volunteers might lead informal cooking demos. Then, in the virtual “living room” many games from around the world are being shared. The goal here is for MozFest participants to share, connect and learn more about each other’s cultures and technology. The cultural party will be an exciting and interactive experience.

Virtual Embassy

  • The virtual embassy, led by participants within an assigned time frame, will raise awareness about Internet Health issues, technologies, and cultures in countries around the world. For example, someone from Tanzania might share perspectives about the challenges and opportunities they are seeing in their country. Participants will frame and discuss these issues from a cultural perspective. The virtual embassy will be an interactive experience. Those leading the virtual embassy experiences will make concrete plans to engage the participants.

Join us in the Global Culture and Heritage space. Submit your session proposal to this space by 23 November. We look forward to welcoming a rich mix of space participants and fostering the intercultural collaborations at Mozfest emerging in this space.
